Durability
The softness and breathability of cotton comes at the disadvantage that it is somewhat less durable than synthetic materials. It would be great to just keep a hammock in your backyard and not have to worry about it, but all materials will weather and fade. And cotton will also mold if it gets wet in the rain without drying out. To extend the life of this hammock, it is definitely advised to not leave it outside if you’re not using it.
That said, it is made of strong cotton so you should feel safe while swaying in the wind. So, as long as you take care of it and keep it from weathering or molding, you shouldn’t have too many problems.

The cotton material on this hammock is really soft and will remind you of a soft towel. The hammock bed is definitely big enough for two people to be comfortable in, and is even better to enjoy alone. We love the curved spreader bar which makes this hammock stand out from other ones. The spreader bar spreads the hammock ropes out a bit, but not as much as the other flat hammocks. This also resists potential rollover from the hammock, and functions as a sort of handlebar when getting in and out.

Of course as mentioned before, while cotton is often preferred for it super soft touch, it is also a bit less durable than synthetic materials. Most traditional hammocks were rope hammocks like this, but these modern versions are much more comfortable and better in many ways. With rope hammocks you have to consider the rope thickness and the density of the weave. If the rope is too thin and not dense enough, it will cut into your skin too much. Your bodyweight has to be distributed pretty evenly for it to be comfortable.
The Castaway Traditional Hammock has an 8 mm thick cotton rope with good density designed to improve comfort by distributing the weight and by reducing rope elongation on tension. Rope hammocks are also great because they have really great airflow, which will keep you from sweating into it in the summer. The spreader bars also add to the comfort because it keeps to hammock in a much more flat position than hammocks without spreader bars.
If you need to be even more cozy on it, lay a sheet over the rope and use a pillow for head support. And Viola, you will be in weightless heaven in no time.
Durability
As with other cotton and non-synthetic materials, you have to take care of this hammock. If you leave it outside and exposed to the sun and in the rain, it will eventually fade and/or mold and even become weaker. Keep in mind, that even synthetic materials will wear out with time if subjected to constant weathering. That said, don’t stress about bringing it in every night. As long as you don’t leave it out for extended periods of time without using it it will last a long time. You can also use mild detergent to clean the hammock.
Versatility
This hammock is great for use in the house, or anywhere in your garden. It’s very easy to hang most places you want to use it, and light enough to move it from place to place or even take it with you on a trip. That said, it is not weather resistant so you must be more careful with it, and it’s also not as light as hammocks designed for camping trips. One thing that is great about backyard hammocks is that they are relatively inexpensive compared to other types of hammocks. Camping hammocks are pricy because they need to be super light while maintaining strength. Hanging egg chairs have much more material in them, which increases the cost too. Backyard hammocks, on the other hand, are fairly basic and therefore very affordable. They are definitely less expensive than any other outdoor furniture like chairs, recliners, or swings.
So if you’re looking for a great hammock for a backyard, you should expect to spend somewhere between $30 and $70. There are a couple of more expensive models but most of the time the price comes with higher quality or some other additional features.

Although polyester will still weather over time, it will definitely last longer than natural materials like cotton. If you live in a really humid area, polyester would also be better suited to prevent mold.
However, if you want ultra softness and comfort you may want to go for cotton. Although newer synthetic materials can be very nice to the touch, many people still prefer cotton for ultimate coziness. If you do go for a cotton hammock it would be best not to leave the hammock outside for extended periods of time. Cotton will fade faster and it will also mold if it doesn’t dry out after getting wet.
Weight
