Eagles Nest Outfitters (ENO) SingleNest Hammock
Editor’s Rating =
Overview
Founded in 1999 Eagles Nest Outfitters (ENO) is among the most trusted hammock brands on the market. Their SingleNest Hammock has proven to be a top competitor and is a great option for anything from camping to daytime hangouts.
At just 17oz and made from triple stitched durable parachute nylon the hammock offers a excellent combination of toughness and lightweight.
Not to mention that the hammock packs down to the size of a softball into it’s attached compression stuff sack. This makes it backpack friendly and perfect for anyone who plans to transport their hammock longer distances
Specks and Ratings
Material: Nylon
Capacity: 1-person
Weight Limit: 400 lb
Unfolded Dimensions: 9′ 4″ x 4′ 7″
Packed Dimensions: 4″ x 5″
Color: Various
Weight: 17 oz
Recommended Use: backpacking, camping, casual
Manufacturer Warranty: 2 years
Comfort
The ENO SingleNest Hammock is one of the smaller single hammocks on the market, which may make it less suitable if you are taller/larger or just need extra space while you sleep. That said, comfort us rather subjective and if you are a smaller camper you may find it a perfect fit and sleep very well.
We also found that it’s not the most comfortable parachute nylon hammock out there, which is why we would recommend trying out another hammock if you are in search of ultimate comfort. If you are looking for a single hammock, consider the Grand Trunk Single which is the same weight but offers a whole extra foot in length.
If you plan to mostly use your hammock for daytime hangouts and kicking back for just a few hours than the SingleNest is a great option and you likely won’t notice the smaller size. The hammock performed well for these types of use.
If you plan on using the hammock in colder temperatures you’ll want to gear up with a hammock under quilt to stay warm and comfortable.
Although the the hammock offers a great combination overall of durability, weight, and comfort, do keep in mind that it tends to sleep smaller than other hammocks.
Weight & Size
The ENO SingleNest Hammock is ultra-packable and compresses down to the size of a softball when packed in it’s compression stuff sack. This is a huge plus for anyone looking for one of the most backpack friendly hammock options.
At just 17 oz the hammock is certainly in the category of lightweight hammocks and with it’s combination of small size makes it ideal for space conscious campers. However, note that it’s not the lightest hammock out there and does not include the suspension system or other gear upgrades, such as a hammock bug net or rain fly, that you’ll likely need before spending nights sleeping outdoors.
The hammock does come with ENO Aluminum Wiregate Carabiners and nautical grade line that comes in handy to secure the SingleNest to trees or other objects.
Durability
Built from 70D high tenacity breathable nylon taffeta and triple interlocking stitching the ENO SingleNest Hammock is built to last. There were no standout durability issues and there’s not doubt the hammock can handle years of use and hold up even in the most harsh conditions.
Although the hammock is a designed as a single it is built to hold a maximum weight of 400 lbs. Two smaller and lighter user could easily use the hammock for sitting and lounging around without reaching the maximum designed capacity.
Eagle Nest Outfitters is one of the most trusted hammock manufactures out there and is know to stand behind their products. The hammock comes with a 2-year manufactures warranty if any durability issues were to arise from use.
Versatility
The ENO SingleNest Hammock does not come with a hammock straps, so we paired it with ENO Atlas Hammock Suspension System and found the setup to be a great choice.
Although you can mix-and-match almost all hammocks and suspension systems we still feel that sometimes it’s a good idea to pair them from the same manufacture. This way you know they are designed with ultimate product comparability in mind.
The smaller size of the ENO SingleNest Hammock shines when you have to setup your hammock in constricted spaces. You’ll find it much easier to hang the hammock in tight locations vs. a larger our double sized hammocks.
Value
The ENO SingleNest is among the lowest priced hammocks on the market and an overall great value for anyone looking for a solid lightweight and packable hammock.
You’ll get the hammock and two of ENO ultralight carabiners, but remember that the hammock is sold without a suspension system so you will have to invest in this before you can use it. Expect to pay $30 for a high quality suspension system such as the ENO Atlas Hammock Suspension System.
The Bottom Line
The Eagles Nest Outfitters SingleNest Hammock is not the most comfortable hammock we tested and will fit a bit smaller than other single models. Given its weight and that it can be packed down to a super small size in it’s stuff sack it does make for a great option for throwing in your backpack and using it for lounging around.
Eagles Nest Outfitters (ENO) DoubleNest Hammock
Editor’s Rating =
As one of the most popular models on the market, the Eagles Nest Outfitters DoubleNest Hammock is a top competitor the best double hammock. The hammock has received tons of great feedback and hype among outdoor enthusiasts and campers alike—and rightly so.
As a larger and more spacious version of the SingleNest Hammock, the ENO DoubleNest is a great well-rounded double hammock that can comfortably fit two people.
It’s lightweight at just 20 oz, made from durable parachute nylon, and considerably comfortable at 6’2″ long which makes it a great value for anyone looking for a two person hammock for a variety of uses.
It’s top competitors on the market are the Grand Trunk Double and the Serac Sequoia Ultralight XL Double Hammock, which in our opinion outrank the DoubleNest because of their larger size and added comfort.
However, don’t let that stop you from considering the ENO DoubleNest as it was a close runner-up and has a huge fan base.

Comfort
Built from stretchy 70D high-tenacity breathable nylon taffeta, the Eagles Nest Outfitters DoubleNest is truly a super comfortable hammock. In deed, the comfort level is the main reasons so many people have flocked to this hammock and given it very high reviews.
The parachute nylon is extremely breathable which is a bonus when relaxing and sleeping during hot summer months and it is soft enough to use against bare skin.
It may not be as large and spacious as other double hammock models on the market, but if you’re not concerned about shear size then the ENO DoubleNest could be a solid option for you. We found it plenty large enough to comfortably fit two people and possible to completely cocoon up in the extra material when sleeping in it solo.
When it comes to comparing the ENO DoubleNest to other double hammocks out there it is a very close call. Given personal preferences and sleeping positions one may find the larger sized Grand Trunk Double to be overall more comfortable, but this hammock was a very close runner-up.
Weight & Size
At 20 oz the ENO DoubleNest is among the lightest double hammocks on the market and comes with two ultralight ENO Aluminum Wiregate Carabiners and lightweight nautical grade line.
An added bonus is that this model comes with an ultra-lightweight compression stuff sack to make packing away the hammock easy and efficient. When it’s packed down to the 4″ x 5″ size, you won’t have much trouble finding a place for it in your pack.
This incredible portability is what makes it one of our favorite double hammocks for providing a place to sit and relax around camp or cozying up just for sunset with your significant other.
Note that the hammock does not come with a suspension system, so keep in mind that you will need to add a high-quality hammock straps to your setup before you head out on your first adventure.
You’ll also want to consider other gear upgrades, such as a hammock bug net or rain fly if you plan on frequently sleeping outdoors.
Durability
As a hammock brand, Eagle Nest Outfitters is one of the most trusted manufactures out there, which is why they have such a huge following. It’s also great to know that all of their hammocks offer a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty if any durability issues were to arise from use.
Constructed from extra strong parachute nylon with added triple interlocking stitching the ENO DoubleNest is built to last. Buying a hammock with high quality materials and construction is vital if you want to get years of future use from the hammock.
As a double hammock it’s designed for two people and can hold a maximum weight of 400 lbs. This means you can rest assured in your hammock without worrying about the hammock failing; just keep in mind not to overload it with more weight than designed. You can even set up the hammock for a kids hangout around camp and have several kids comfortable fit into it.
Overall we didn’t find any durability issues, and we are confident that with proper care this hammock can withstand even the harshest weather and elements year-after-year.
Versatility
Given it’s incredible portability and lightweight the ENO DoubleNest ranks as one of the most versatile double hammocks.
We love double hammocks because they are generally more spacious and comfortable than singles, plus they only weigh a few ounces more. We found the ENO DoubleNest was a perfect option for two people to relax in as a chair or hanging up along the trail during a long day hike. However, even as a double for ultimate comfort you’ll want to sleep in the hammock solo so that you’ll have plenty or material to wrap yourself up in.
At a slightly smaller length you have the added benefit that you can hang the hammock in more restricted spaces and between tighter trees. This can come in handy when hanging options are limited.
We want to stress that because it packs down to the size of a grapefruit, you’ll always be wanting to bring the hammock along just for the added bonus of relaxing off the ground. It’s one of the most backpack friendly double hammocks and once packed away in its attached stuff sack you can easily slide it into you bag.
Although designed as a camping hammock, the ENO DoubleNest is incredibly versatile an ideal for anything from backpacking, traveling, relaxing at the beach, or just kicking back in your back yard or indoors.
Value
The ENO DoubleNest is comparable to other double camping hammocks on the market. We didn’t feel that it was a standout competitor when it came to value, but given it’s combination of lightweight and portability it can be a great all-around double hammock.
With the hammock you’ll get two of ENOs ultralight carabiners and a built-in stuff sack, but remember that this hammock is also sold without a suspension system. This may be because some people have their own rigging and ropes they use already. If you need, there are many great hammock strap options out there, but an easy solution is theENO Atlas Hammock Suspension System.
The Bottom Line
The Eagles Nest Outfitters DoubleNest Hammock is a great lightweight, yet durable double camping hammock. For anyone keen on sticking with a Eagles Nest Outfitter hammock and looking for ultimate portability and comfort this is for sure a model to consider.
Serac Ultralight Pocket Hammock
Editor’s Rating =
If you’re in search for a seriously functional, lightweight and durable hammock, then look no further than the Serac Ultralight Pocket Hammock. This hammock is a great all-around hammock that fits multi-purposes.
It’s a perfect hammock choice for casually kicking back in your yard on a summer day or posting up camp in the high mountains during a backpacking trip.
Why is the Serac Classic Hammock so good? It’s packable. It’s lightweight. It’s durable. And it’s insanely comfortable.

Weight Limit: 500 lbs
Unfolded Dimensions: 9′ 10″ long x 5′ 7″ wide
Packed Dimensions: 6″ tall x 6″ diameter
Weight: 19 oz (hammock) & 6 oz (straps)

Comfort
The Serac Ultralight Pocket Hammock was among the most comfortable hammocks we reviewed. The combination of stretchy and softness that the DiamondWeave nylon blend fabric offers is simply amazing and we found it comfortable even on bare skin.
The hammock is larger and wider than most hammocks on the market which makes for an ultra-comfortable hang that we found more than spacious. Two people can easily fit in the hammock for relaxing and if you plan on sleeping overnight you’ll have plenty of room and enough material to wrap up in as a solo camper.
The hammock felt extremely breathable and makes it a perfect option for camping during hotter summer months. We’d recommend it as a three season camping hammock, but during the winter you will want to invest in a hammock under quilt to stay warm during cold and windy conditions.
Weight & Size
The Serac Ultralight Pocket Hammock is sold as a hammock and strap bundle, both of which are ultralight products. The hammock weights a mere 19 oz and the straps an additional 6 oz, which puts the combined weight just over Seracs’s single hammock model.
A convenient attached stuff compression sack allows you to quickly and easily pack the hammock into a small 6″ tall x 6″ diameter size and pack it away for travel.
Unfolded the hammock measures 9′ 10″ long x 5′ 7″ wide which is wider than most models. It provides more than enough room for two people to sit in and is ultra-spacious for a single person to sleep overnight in.

Not only is the DiamondWeave ripstop nylon lightweight, but it provides the perfect combination of strength and durability against rips, punctures, and anything else nature can throw at it.
Serac is known for providing some of the best customer service in the industry and all of their products are backed by a 5-year unlimited warranty. Knowing that they stand behind their products gives you peace of mind when you hang.
Versatility
You can tell that a lot of thought went into the design of the Serac Ultralight Pocket Hammock as it comes with some unique features that make it super simple to hang. You won’t have to worry about tying knots with the multi-loop tree straps that have 10 anchor points. We found this feature helps make it almost effortless to find the right hang for the hammock.
These features make it stand out from it’s competition and are what makes it a perfect hammock for anyone from a beginner to someone with lots of experience.
We loved that the Serac Ultralight Pocket Hammock offers plenty of room when hanging in it, yet it’s one of the most portable camping hammocks on the market. When stuffed in it’s attached compression stuff sack it packs down to a small ball that you’ll easily find room for in you pack.
Given it larger size it can be used as either a sitting place for two when just relaxing around camp or a hike or used to sleep in for a ultra comfortable ans spacious sleeping hammock. As a solo camper you’ll have plenty of material to warp yourself up in to stay cozy during the night.
Value
As far as value for your money, the Serac Ultralight Pocket Hammock ranks among the top for double camping hammocks.
Remember that it is sold as a complete setup—you’ll get the double hammock, two 6ft tree straps, two ultralight aluminum wire gate carabiners, plus an attached compression sack for easy transport. Even with all the gear included it is priced less than most other double hammocks on the market and by no means are you sacrificing quality or functionality.
Serac’s unique suspension system is easy to handle and incredibly comfortable. This makes the Serac Classic is a great hammock for first time hammock users and can easily by put up in minutes (check out the full video demonstrating just how easy it is!).
This by far one of the best all-around hammocks on the market and is an excellent value for the money. Plus you get an industry leading 5-year manufactures warranty and a company that provides great customer service and stands behind their product.
The Serac Ultralight Pocket Hammock is on of our all-time favorite hammocks that can fit anyone’s hammocking styles. It’s simple and ultra-comfortable suspension system can be installed in a few minutes and is perfect for relaxing just about anywhere–backyards to beaches.

Depending on what climate, weather, and overall conditions you’ll be sleeping in, camping hammocks can be outfitted with accessories to ensure you stay dry and comfortable.
There is a lot of hammock gear on the market to choose from and you’ll want to make sure you choose products compatible with the size of your hammock. It often makes sense to purchase gear that is manufactured by the same brand to insure proper fit and compatibility.
Here is a quick review of different types of hammock gear you can outfit your camping hammock with:
Hammock Straps
Most camping hammocks on the market today are sold separately and you’ll likely need to purchase a quality pair of hammock straps. There are tons of great products available and you can choose one that fits your needs the best.

With a hammock underquilt you can use your camping hammock in the chilliest winter temperatures year-round. High quality models are made with Primaloft® or down insulation and have a DWR water resistant nano coating to stay dry. With a hammock underquilt you can stay warm even in the cold conditions down to 30 – 40°F. They can also be packed small into a stuff sack for easy travel.
Some of the best models on the market are the ENO Spark TopQuilt, the ENO Vulcan Water-Repellent UnderQuilt, and the OneTigris 3 Seasons Shield Cradle Double Hammock Underquilt
Hammock Bug Net
Having a hammock bug net is a lifesaver in buggy and mosquito prone environments. You’ll be glad you have one if there are lots of flying insects and they will help you get sound sleep by keeping pests away.
Consider adding one to your gear setup if you plan on sleeping near water bodies or traveling with a hammock to tropical countries. Check out some of the current top Hammock Bug Nets!
Hammock Bags & Compression Sacks
A bag specially designed to store your hammock can be a great addition and makes staying organized much easier. Many have separate pockets for all your gear including your hammock, straps, and more.
If packing efficiently is important compression sacks are great for way to pack your hammock super small for transporting. Similar to a sleeping bag compression sack, you can put your hammock in one and compress it down to an ultra small size. This is ideal for backpackers and travelers limited on space, and makes for the most portable hammock.
Hammock Pads
For ultra comfort, you can add a hammock pad to your gear setup. These are similar to camping pads but include wings that curve around the side of your hammock. The special design helps you stay comfortable while curled up in your hammock and prevents it from slipping around while sleeping.
There’s no doubt that if you want the most cozy hammock, adding a hammock pad can help add a bit more cush and offers insulation in colder camping conditions. Our favorites are the Klymit Hammock V and the Eagles Nest Outfitters – AirLoft Hammock Mattress.
Gear Slings
A gear sling is a great way to get your backpack and additional gear off the ground and accessible while you’re hanging in your hammock. They help you store your gear underneath your hammock protected and within easy reach. Check out Amazon for a selection of hammock gear slings.
Sleeping Bags
Choosing the right sleeping bag for hammock camping is crucial. A mediocre bag may be ok if you are in a tent and have a pad underneath and maybe another person to keep you warm ;). However, for hammock camping, you need to make sure a sleeping bag is very warm, lightweight, packable and waterproof. Hammock under quilts could pair up with a decent sleeping bag as well, but if you invest in a great sleeping bag, it’s all you may need.
Some of our favorites are the Hyke & Byke Crestone Hydrophobic Down Sleeping Bag, the GEERTOP Ultralight Down Hammock Underquilt Mummy Sleeping Bag, and the Ledge Sports Scorpion +45 for a low-cost warm temperature bag.

What is a Camping Hammock?
In the most general definition, a hammock is constructed of a strong material with a suspension system that can be attached to trees or a hammock stand.
Modern, hi-tech camping hammocks, however, are much much more than that. They have been refined to be ultra-lightweight, durable, and incredibly comfortable for sleeping in, making them a top piece of gear for lightweight camping and backpacking.
Plus, for travel purposes they are incredibly packable and compress down to a very small size compared to a tent.
After discovering how comfortable and versatile camping hammocks are in comparison to traditional tents and camping chairs, you’ll never leave on your next adventure without one!
Alright, enough about the great benefits that make camping hammocks so popular with today’s adventurers, let’s see how to choose the best camping hammock for you and compare the top models!
What to Consider When Buying a Camping Hammock
Here are a few things to keep in mind when deciding which camping hammock to purchase. You’ll want to think about each factor and how important it is to you.
Cost
This should be the first thing you consider when shopping for a camping hammock. An upside to camping hammocks is that you don’t have to break the bank on a quality product. Even the most expensive hammocks, such as Hennessy Hammocks, will cost only a fraction of a high-end camping tent.
You should purchase a high quality and well regarded hammock that stands behind their products vs cheap hammocks that won’t last. Depending on the quality and size of the hammock you can expect to spend $20 for a cheaper model and around $250 for the best camping hammock on the market.
When choosing your price range you have to consider how you will use your hammocks—how often, where, and in what conditions. Obviously, if you plan on on using your hammock every weekend during the summer for years to come, you will want to spend a little extra to insure you get the most durable hammock. Think of it as a one-time investment.
That said, for most users spending $30 to $80 is plenty to choose a great quality, well-designed, lightweight hammock. With this in mind, consider a price range you want to spend and dive into our reviews; we’ve included the top products over every price range and we’re sure you’ll find the right hammock for you.
Weight
How much the hammock weighs is one of the most important factor when choosing a camping hammock. You may want to focus on ultra-lightweight camping hammocks if you plan on backpacking and carrying the hammock over long distances. Anyone who has hiked long distances with a heavy backpack knows that every ounce matters—especially on a full day hike.
If you’re mostly going to be car camping and/or not carrying the hammock very far… weight may not be of prime importance for you. In this case you may want to go with a more heavy duty hammock. The good news is that the best camping hammocks on today’s market are both super lightweight and very durable.
This is thanks to strong materials like parachute nylon combined with high quality construction. Another thing that comes hand-in-hand with weight is compactability and in general, the lighter the hammock, the smaller it packs down.
If you really want to save weight and are camping with a significant other, you could consider carrying a double (2-person) camping hammock instead of two single hammocks. Double hammocks will easily accommodate 2 people for sitting and chilling in during the day, and if you don’t mind being super cozy with them, you can sleep in it together as well… but of course it may not be as comfortable as having a hammock to yourself. We’ve included a wide array of hammocks in every weight category from the lightest backpacking hammocks on the market to ultra-sturdy two person hammocks for car camping.
Dimensions
You’ll find camping hammocks in a wide array of sizes and depending on their intended use a larger or smaller sized hammock may work better. In most cases, the wider and longer the hammock, the more comfortable the hammock is, especially for sleeping in them overnight. The larger the hammock area the less of an angle you will have to be bent while laying. A larger camping hammock will will also allow more space to wiggle and move around without losing stability and you’ll also have more side material to wrap around yourself.
When it comes to sleeping hammocks, you want a hammock that provides the best support and comfort throughout the night so you are not tossing and turning. The good news is that the best camping hammocks are tried-and-true for providing a comfortable night’s rest.
On the other hand, If you are looking for a day-use sitting hammock that you can kickback in at camp or for just lounging around your yard, you won’t need as much space and you can get away with a smaller size.
Lastly, there are great double camping hammock options for two people to use for daytime relaxing. If you really want space you can use a double hammock just for yourself!
Strength
This is one aspect that you don’t want to skimp on. Whatever type of hammock you are buying you want to insure that it is well-made. Quality materials and construction are essential for a safe and long-lasting camping hammock. The last thing you want is the stitching to fail on a long trip!
The best camping hammocks on the market are made from either parachute nylon or polyester that is UV and weather resistant. These materials stay strong and durable for many years and are much less likely to fail over time. If you are not overly rough with your gear, a high quality hammock can last for years with proper care.
Investing in a hammock constructed with the best materials and a brand that stands behind their workmanship will be money well spent.
Once you purchase a camping hammock you’ll also want to learn how to hang a hammock using a good set of hammock straps to ensure you are hanging it properly to avoid damage.
The hammocks included in our reviews are all from well-trusted brands known to make the strongest and most reliable hammocks on the market.
Capacity
With camping hammocks you basically have two options: a single hammock or a double hammock. This comes down to personal preference and if you will be using the hammock individually or with a partner. The nice part is that you can always buy a double hammock and sleep in it solo without any real drawbacks other than carrying a little extra weight.
Two person camping hammocks are wider and stronger than single models, and with this of course they will have a higher max weight capacity for two occupants. You can expect that double hammocks will weigh several ounces heavier than their single counterparts and have an extra foot or more of width. However, if you are backpacking or traveling with a partner you can save weight as a group by using a double hammock over two single hammocks.
Intended Use
How do you expect to use your camping hammock—do you want a sleeping hammock or a sitting hammock for mostly day use? Depending on how you plan to use your hammock you will want to steer towards one model vs. another. This will help you choose the best camping hammock for your type of use.
If you plan on camping overnight you will want to buy extra hammock accessories such as a hammock tarp or hammock bug net.
Keep your intended use in mind when you purchase your camping hammock vs the option of purchasing a hammock tent. The most versatile option is to buy a camping hammock without any shelter system and purchase separate hammock gear (hammock tarp, bug net, hammock underquilt, etc). This way you can use the hammock for multiple uses from daytime to nighttime. Apart from the Hennessy Explorer Deluxe XL, the ETROL Complete Camping Hammock Kit , and Warbonnet Blackbird, the hammocks I’ve included on this page do not include a built in shelter system.
Hammock Straps
Hammock straps are clearly one of the most important parts of a hammock and you’ll want to make sure your setup has high quality tree straps for securing hanging your hammock. Some hammock models, such as the Serac Ultralight Pocket Hammock come as a kit that include both the camping hammock and tree straps. However, more commonly you will find that hammocks and hammock straps are sold separately.
Having high quality hammock straps means it will be easier to hang your hammock and ultimately a safer hammocking experience. The last thing you want is for your hammock to drop you onto the ground because you bought inadequate hammock straps! In general, camping hammocks will be secured to trees, but they can also be attached to poles or a hammock stand.
Buying Online
You’re likely going to be purchasing your hammock online. Be sure to check the seller’s return policy before making the purchase. Both Amazon and Backcountry.com are great place to shop because they offer numerous customer reviews and almost always offer return policies for unused items if the product just wasn’t right.
I can highly recommend purchasing outdoor gear from Backcountry.com because they offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee, which means you can return your hammock if you are not happy with it.
Warranty
Be sure to compare the manufacturer’s warranty that comes with the hammock. Although all of the brands we’ve included in our reviews are high quality hammocks that are well-trusted by gear enthusiasts, it’s important to know that they stand behind their product.
Generally you should look to buy a hammock that comes with at least a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty. This seems to be the industry standard on quality products and I would shy away from any products offering less.
You’ll find that the Serac Ultralight Pocket Hammock and Serac Sequoia Ultralight XL Double Hammock come with a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty, which is the best we’ve found.
Packability
If you plan on carrying your hammock long distances, you’ll want to look for a hiking hammock or backpacking hammock that is specifically designed for these activities.
For users who value lightweight and compact gear, be sure to compare the packed size to ensure you purchase an easily portable hammock that you won’t have to sweat to find room for in your pack.
The good news is that in general, hammocks don’t take up much space when they are packed into their storage bag and can even be packed smaller when using a compression sack.
Most models we’ve included in our best camping hammock reviews fall into this category and weigh close to 1 lb and pack down to the size of a softball.
Camping Hammock Materials
When choosing the best camping hammock that fits your needs, it’s important to consider the material that it’s constructed from. Ultimately the material of the hammock plays a key role in the comfort, feel, durability, and how small it packs and weight.
Here is an overview of different camping hammock materials:
Parachute Nylon
The most common material used in camping hammocks is ultra-strong parachute nylon. The fabric is extremely durable and allows small amount of stretch which allows for extra comfort when laying for an extended period of time.
Nylon is very resistant to UV radiation, water, and the natural elements. The combination of strength, durability, and weight makes this the ideal material for camping hammocks. Hammocks made from this material may also be simply referred to as parachute hammocks or nylon hammocks.
Backcountry/excursion hammocks can even be constructed with a heavier rip-stop nylon that is similar to what tents are made from. This is the most durable and weather resistant fabric, although it comes at a price as it’s a bit more bulky and heavier. You’ll find the most heavy duty hammocks and also hammock tents made from rip-stop nylon.
Polyester
Most ultra lightweight hammocks are constructed with lightweight polyester fabric that can support up to around 200 lbs. Most ultra lightweight hammocks are constructed with lightweight polyester fabric, however even very thin most models can still hold a max weight of 200lbs. One drawback to ultra-light polyester hammocks is that they are generally less durable and less comfortable than models made with parachute nylon.
Cotton
Given that Cotton hammocks are considerably heavier, bulky, and less resistant to the elements, they are generally reserved for backyards and gardens. These are your typical outdoor hammocks, with a large weave and generally thicker material. Cotton will absorb water making them very heavy and an extra burden to transport when wet, not to mention very cold and uncomfortable for hammock camping.
Types of Camping Hammocks
There are several different types of camping hammocks available on the market and even more models to choose from within each category. Based on these general categories you can choose which hammock type fits your needs and focus on choosing the right model from the best camping hammock models.
Here is a general review of the basic camping hammock types and their intended use:
Single Hammocks
Single camping hammocks are perfect for one person, whether you’re sleeping overnight or just relaxing during the day. The top models on the market are very versatile, lightweight, and perfect for the single camper.
You’ll find that single models are constructed from mostly parachute nylon, which is the best all-around material and gives you the best mix of comfort, durability, and portability. However, some of the lightweight hammocks are made from polyester, which is also suitable for an outdoor hammock, but may be less durable and less comfortable.

A few of the top rated and most popular single hammocks include the Eagles Nest Outfitters SingleNest Hammock, the Serac Ultralight Pocket Hammock and the Grand Trunk Single Parachute Nylon Hammock.
Double Hammocks
Double camping hammocks are a 2 person camping hammock, basically just a larger and wider version of a single. They are designed to accommodate 2 people, and while they are pretty cozy for a couple of people to chill out in, they are not going to be super comfortable for 2 people to sleep in. Double hammocks can be a better option for a single person when hammock camping because they give extra space and material to cocoon up in. They are designed to hold a higher maximum weight which makes them ideal for larger or heavier users.
Double camping hammock models are perfect if you intend to often hike or camp with a partner or just want some extra room when sleeping. Choose the Best Hammock for Camping
Camping hammocks have become increasingly popular in the last few years resulting in a huge selection of great hammocks on the market to choose from.
Our advice is to start by thinking about how and where you will be using the hammock. Will you be camping? Just hanging out during the day? Will there by rain? What about bugs?
From here you can focus on a certain type and size of hammock and set a price range to compare the top hammocks in this category.
We’ve only included the highest quality hammocks in our reviews, so we’re confident that you’ll be happy with any hammock you choose. However, some hammocks have clear advantages and disadvantages above others, and depending on your needs, one may fit you better.
When choosing a hammock you’ll want to make sure that it includes the features that you want. If you are going to be frequently using it on camping trips you’ll want to be sure to buy a hammock tarp or hammock underquilt or invest in a model that has these feature built-in.
If you plan on using the hammock with a partner then you will want to focus on double hammocks that can hold two people. If you are planning to mostly hang your hammock around camp or just relax during the day in your backyard then you have the flexibility to choose a smaller and lighter hammock without these features.
When considering the size and strength of a hammock, if you are tall or a heavier individual then you will want to go for a wider and more durable model. This will give you extra comfort and security when using your hammock. If you are lighter and smaller you can get away with a smaller and lighter model.
Evaluation Criteria
We rounded up the most popular and best camping hammock models and wrote in-depth reviews to provide the ultimate comparison guide to help you choose the right product. We’ve evaluated each product for comfort, weight, durability, versatility, and value.
Comfort. One of the most important aspects of a great camping hammock is comfort. After all you want to relax and be comfortable when you use your hammock—whether it’s just for a few hours, or sleeping multiple nights while hammock camping.
The two most important factors that make a high quality hammock comfortable are the fabric and design. Having a durable but forgiving fabric, such as parachute nylon, and a design that allows your body to naturally sink into it will make for a much more comfortable hammock.
Overall, this is one of the most important things to consider when choosing the best camping hammock.
Weight. How much the hammock weighs is another top factor when selecting the right model. If you plan on backpacking or traveling with your hammock you’ll want to choose a lightweight hammock model.
The lighter weight the hammock is, the less of a burden it will be to carry long distances in a backpack, and you’ll find yourself using it a lot more. After a long day of hiking or trekking, you’ll thank yourself for having high quality and lightweight gear and it’s likely worth spending a bit more money to invest in a lightweight model.
We include the weight of all hammocks we’ve reviewed and have chosen the best lightweight, yet durable, hammocks on the market. Double camping hammocks also offer a great way to save weight if you plan on using the hammock with another person.
Durability. Durability of the hammock plays a huge role in the overall value of any outdoor gear product. This is no less true with camping hammocks. You want to be sure you spend your hard earned cash on a quality product and that’s why we have selected the best hammocks from well respected brands which have a record of producing high quality products.
The last thing you want is to purchase a hammock that breaks down and fails within the first year of use. Durability is of utmost importance for anyone planning on using their camping hammock year-after-year and setting it up in the harshest weather conditions.
A hammock made with quality fabric and constructed with strong seams will last for many years with the proper care and maintenance.
Versatility. This factor is also very important for most people. Having a hammock that can be used in a wide array of circumstances adds a lot to the overall value. It’s not necessary to have a hammock for each type of activity you’ll be doing.
That’s the great part about camping hammocks since they are incredibly versatile and can be used for multiple uses from relaxing around your yard…to multi-day backpacking trips in the mountains…to trotting around the globe on long international trips.
Camping hammocks are made for the outdoors making them great at withstanding abuse and the elements, and of course you can also hang them indoors and enjoy them during the winter months at home. The bottom line is that whether it serves as a bed for sleeping or just a place to chill-out, having a versatile hammock adds value to your gear choice.
Value. No matter what kind of outdoor gear you are investing in, getting the most bang for your buck is always important. We rate each hammock based on it’s overall value by comparing what you pay to what you get.
With most outdoor gear, generally the more expensive the higher the quality. However there are some great camping hammock options that will not break your wallet and will keep you hanging in them for many years.
What’s Best? Camping Hammock vs. Tent
The first thing that comes to mind when most people think of camping is a tent, however this is quickly changing as hammocks are become increasingly popular. We’ve seen a huge rise of new brands offering a wide array of great hammock options on the market.
You may have to get used to sleeping a different position, but a camping hammock can be a great way to save weight and pack light. With a tent you can lay completely flat on the ground, whereas with a hammock, you will be slightly curved as you body wraps into the hammock’s shape.
Tents offer a great and solid way to camp almost anywhere and if you are planning on heading up into extremely rugged alpine regions then you’ll likely be better off using a sturdy tent. Think windy situations or locations above treeline without anything to attached your hammock straps to.
Using a tent also makes sense with larger groups that can easily share one larger tent and use it as a base camp or for family camping where storage and space is necessary.
On the other hand, hammocks for camping provide the ultimate way to travel and backpack with minimum weight. You don’t have to worry about finding level and smooth ground. No more rocks or roots poking you in your back all night long.
Camping hammocks provide a great way to sleep in milder weather and with the combination of a hammock underquilt you can stay warm even in colder conditions.
Another great aspect of hammocks are that they double as a place to sleep during the night and as a comfortable chill-out place during the day.

- Need trees or rock outcropping to hang your hammock – often limited to sleeping below treeline.
- Not suitable in super windy conditions.
- You’ll need to get used to sleeping in a hammock.
- Without the right gear they can be colder than tents.
- Not much storage space for your backpack and gear.

What’s the Difference – Camping Hammock vs. Garden Hammock?
If you’re not familiar with camping hammocks the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “hammock” is the traditional backyard hammock made from netting. You know, the one you had in your yard with a wood bar and a woven rope net for you to try to climb into without being dumped on the ground as a kid.
There’s not doubt these are great and super comfortable for kicking back and relaxing in around your house, but you would not want to carry this thing on your next backpacking trip.
The biggest thing that sets camping hammocks apart is that they are lightweight and packable. Today camping hammocks are built with high quality material and constructed for ultimate durability. This means that it’s worthwhile to purchase a high quality hammock if you want it to last year after year.
Camping hammocks are also more stable than your average garden hammock, so you don’t have to worry about flipping over in the middle of the night. This results from their design that lets you sink into the middle of the hammock and the overall shape of the hammock.
Hammock straps used for camping are also completely different and allow for a much more stable hammock. They allow you to easily hang your hammock and adjust it for just the right setup
All-in-all it is the design and high quality, durable materials that make camping hammocks incredibly lightweight, stable and strong in comparison to your typical garden hammock.
